Sugar Creek is a popular stream for canoeing and kayaking. There will no doubt be other people on the water that day, but it should be less crowded than the Shades to Turkey Run section of the creek.
Meet at 9:30 at Rock River Landing Trail Head Park at 2722 Rock River Ridge Road, Crawfordsville. 40.038756, -86.958971. If you are at Crawfordsville, go west on Wabash Ave. It changes to Country Club Rd, then follow Rock River Ridge Rd after Country Club turns south. Just before that road makes a sharp left to go under an old railroad overpass, you should continue straight to go to the Trail Head (should be signs for the trail). This is a fairly new access point for the creek, and does not seem to appear on maps. Look for signs for trail access. We will run a shuttle to Deer’s Mill around 10. Bring your kayak or canoe, normal paddling gear, drinking water, lunch or a snack, sunscreen or a hat. PFDs must be worn on the water while on club trips. Total length of the trip is about 12 miles.
After the trip, hikers may want to check out nearby Pine Hills Nature Preserve or Shades State Park.
