East Fork White River Medora to Sparksville, Saturday July 13

Join us on Saturday, July 13th for an easy laid-back 12.5 mile float down some pleasant southern Indiana scenery on the always dependable East Fork of the White River in Jackson County. We will begin our trip at the Medora Covered Bridge DNR public access site. It is located 2 miles east of Medora ( 8 miles SW of Brownstown) on SR 235. The starting point is 78 miles from the center of Indy, (older Delorme page 51-H8) via I-65, SR 11, US 50, SR 135 and SR 235. Our meeting time will be @1030 AM where we will drop off boats and begin an easy 16 mile (round trip) shuttle to the Sparksville DNR access ramp. The covered bridge at Medora is an engineering specimen covering 435 feet and built nearly a century and a half ago (1875), it was originally part of the old coast to coast US 50 route a century ago. It is considered the longest historical (not newly built and original) covered bridge in not only the U.S. but the entire world. After seeing and walking across it any covered bridge you will ever see in your lifetime will appear small compared to it. We normally have about a 2 m.p.h. steady current for dry, mid-summer Indiana river conditions which statewide can become drought-like on most Hoosier streams. We will pass by numerous, lengthy sandbars at nearly every bend of the stream that provide simplicity in desiring a lunch break. Near the half way point the Muscatatuck enters on river left adding over 1,000 square miles of SE Indiana drainage and introduces the Indiana "Knobs'' towering over 300 feet in the distance. Our destination will be the Sparksville DNR public access site just downstream from the two span Sparksville Iron Bridge. It is another timepiece built in 1890 and measuring in at 425 feet long The HCKC has ran this section two other times with the last one being exactly five years ago on July 13, 2019 with 11 paddlers from 3 states attending. Please Email by Friday night July 12th @ or by phone (812) 767-1317

Sincerely, East Fork White River trip leader since 2010,

Richard Tekulve
