WW: Lower Yough Class III
June 17th thru 18th
Trip Sponsor: Jeff Stejskal
Always a great trip! The beauty of the Highlands area is renowned and the location of two Frank Lloyd Wright architectural gems. The Lower Yough is one of the best known whitewater runs in the eastern United States. Since there is a reservoir upstream, it reliably runs during the entire warm water paddling season, in most years. The Lower Yough is 7.5 miles of Class III whitewater rapids. It is considered a “drop & pool” river: the rapids are separated by calm deep pools, allowing you to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery.
Required Equipment: Helmet, Spray Skirt, Paddle, PFD, Wetsuit or Dry suite depending on air/water temperature and Whitewater boat. Dress for the swim.
Required Skills: Be able to perform a wet exit with a spray skirt. But better for the group to have paddlers that have a pool roll or a combat roll. This is a step up from the Class II rivers of Big Pine and East Race.
Camping location: Tall Oaks Campground which is now owned by Wilderness Voyageurs. Campsite are $16 per person and can be reserved online or by calling 1-800-272-4141. I have not reserved a Field site this year because of the cost.
Address: 544 Camp Riamo Rd, Farmington, PA 15437
Other trip costs Launch passes which are $10 per person required on the weekend. You need buy a pass both Saturday and Sunday.
Formal trip details will be sent out to the registrants before the event.
