Trip Announcement

OHIO RIVER PADDLE AND CAMPOUT ON 12 MILE ISLAND

SEPTEMBER 22-23, 2018
TRIP SPONSOR:  ANDY THIENEMAN

2018 OHIO RIVER TRIP:  This is always an interesting paddle because of the many paddling and camping options.  Downstream on the Kentucky side is Harrod’s creek, a popular paddling site for Louisville kayakers.  6 miles downstream is  a nature preserve called 6 Mile Island.  Upstream is 14 mile creek which is in the park and is very isolated and always an enjoyable paddle.  If we are very energetic we could paddle up to 18 mile island and do primitive camping.

CAMPSITE:  We can camp in Charlestown State Park which has showers and flash toilette or we can camp on 12 mile island.  This island is maintained by the Louisville K of C.  There is a mowed field for tents and an area in the woods for hammocks.  There is a port-a-john  on the island.  Usually we decide as a group where to stay.

MEETING PLACE:  Charlestown State Park, located several miles east of Charlestown on Hwy 62.  From Indy take exit 19, Hwy 160 off of I-65.  Hay 160 ends at a T intersection with Hwy 62.  Go left about 1/2 mile to the park entrance on the right.  Follow the signs to the launch site on the Ohio.

WHAT TO BRING:  Kayak, other paddling gear and overnight camping gear.

TRIP REQUIREMENTS:  Sea or touring kayak with fore and aft bulkheads, spray skirt and PFD

SCHEDULE:  Saturday:   Meet at launch site at 10:00 AM EDT.

                       Sunday:     negotiable

CONTACT INFORMATION:  If interested please contact me before 7 PM Thursday Sept 20.
